Inserting a highly-customized Table of Contents. To generate a Table of Contents in Microsoft Word in which the content or formatting of your TOC items differ from your document's headings, use TC fields to mark your entries and/or modify the TOC Styles to change formatting. Other manual changes may still be necessary, depending on your document.
Go to the References Ribbon, click to expand the Table of Contents menu, and select Insert Table of Contents. Under the Table of Contents tab select Options. Delete all other priorities leaving only Appendix Subheadings with a priority of 1. Click Ok and when Word asks "would you like to replace the selected table of contents" select No
Step 1: Choose to Insert a Custom Table. Back in the References tab, choose the Table of Contents menu once again. From the Table of Contents options, select Custom Table of Contents. A table of contents dialog box will appear. This is where you can specify the parameters of your custom table.
Use the built-in heading styles, but change their formatting as follows: Apply a heading to some text. Then press Ctrl+Shift+S. In the Apply Styles pane, verify that the style name is the one you want (Heading 1 for top-level headings, Heading 2 for the first sub-heading, etc.). Click the Modify button.
Creating an Automatic Table of Content. To insert the Automatic Table of Content in Microsoft Word, place the insertion pointer at the top of the page that will contain the Table of Content. Then Go to Reference > Table of Contents, and select either Automatic Table 1 or Automatic Table 2.
